From: Effect of nicotine on Staphylococcus aureus biofilm formation and virulence factors

Nicotine increased S. aureus attachment and polysaccharide intercellular adhesin (PIA) production. (A) The number of attached bacteria was counted and analyzed. More attached cells were observed in the nicotine-treated group (3.44 ± 0.36 × 105, n = 3) than in the control (2.25 ± 0.57 × 105, n = 3). (B) Transcriptional levels of the fnbA and ebh genes in S. aureus USA300 strain cultured in TSB and TSB supplemented with 2 mg/mL nicotine for 2 h were detected by qRT-PCR(n = 3). (C) The levels of PIA were detected by CLSM. No significant difference between the nicotine treatment and control groups. *P < 0.05 compared with untreated group.
