Schematic representation of the formulation, and of its proposed function in the intestinal tract: (I) diffusion of phe through the coating followed by its breakdown in the presence of loaded PAL and release of ammonia and trans-cinnamic acid from the formulation. (II) By blocking the diffusion of digestive enzymes, the polymer coating protects PAL against enzymatic degradation.
