Summary of sampling strategy for cases and controls across England. 1MSOA = Mid-level Super-Output areas; contiguous LSOAs, constrained by the 2003 English local authority boundaries, average population 7,200 inhabitants. 2LSOA = Lower level Super-Output Areas (LSOAs); designed by the Office for National Statistics to have a socially homogeneous population with an average 1500 residents in each area. The census Output Areas are the smallest statistical enumeration level in England, and the Super Output Areas are the smallest grouping of contiguous output areas used to generate official statistics.
