Photomicrographs showing: (a,b) the physical properties of the grains in the As-received core sample (ARcore) from 2155 m depth in both white (a) and fluorescence (b) reflected-light microscopy. (c,d) The corresponding drill cuttings (ARcutt) sample shows widespread physical deformation of the grains in the form of micro-fractures, more prevalent in the larger silt and sand grains possibly due to the stress exerted from the drilling process. These micro-fractures are absent in the corresponding ARcore samples from (a,b).
