Figure 6

Effect of aerobic exercise training type on hindlimb muscle mitochondrial biogenesis and content in ApoE-/- mice with LEAD. (A) mRNA expression of genes involved in mitochondrial biogenesis (PGC-1α, PGC-1β, NRF1, and TFAM), as measured by quantitative real-time PCR. (B) Relative mitochondrial DNA content, as measured by the analysis of the mtDNA/nDNA ratio, and citrate synthase activity. (C) mRNA expression of genes encoding mitochondrial respiratory chain complex (ND1, ND6, CYTC, COXIV, CYTB), as measured by quantitative real-time PCR. Results in the exercised groups are expressed as an x-fold change relative to non-ischemic or ischemic muscle of SED mice (quantitative real-time PCR data, n = 6–8 mice per group) or as percentage of SED mice (citrate synthase activity, n = 4 mice per group). Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA with Dunnett’s post-hoc test: #P < 0.05, ##P < 0.01, ###P < 0.001, ####P < 0.0001 vs. SED.
