Graphical representation of monocytes in the blood (cells 103/mm3), macrophages in the BALF (cells.104/ml) and immunostained macrophages in the lung tissue (cells 10–5/µm2). Each point represents one animal and bars show median. Representative photomicrographs (20 ×, scale bars 50 μm) of immunostained MAC2-positive macrophages in the lung parenchyma: the LPS + PM group showed increased macrophages, showing the same pattern as the BALF. ‡p < 0.05 compared to the control group. *p < 0.05 compared to the LPS5w group. #p < 0.05 compared to the LPS + PM group. The two-way ANOVA analyses showed that the BALF macrophage count was influenced by the PM exposure and by the interaction between the LPS and PM exposure. The immunostained macrophages were influenced only by the PM exposure.
