The bar plots show levels of IL8 released by cells from a mammary epithelial cell line when exposed to bacterial pellet from healthy controls (Controls_t0, n = 18; Controls_t1, n = 22); sub-acute mastitis (SAM_t0, n = 21; SAM_t1, n = 17); and acute mastitis (AM_t0, n = 2; AM_t1, n = 3). Supernatants from mammary cells exposed only to culture medium were used as negative controls (n = 8). **p < 0.01, non-parametric Kruskal–Wallis test.
