Growth in per-capita food demand is driven to similar extents by increasing body mass index (and connected under- or overconsumption), higher food waste and rising food energy requirements (dependent on age, sex and height for a normal-weight BMI) (A). Total demand for animal-source foods is mainly driven by population growth and a higher share of animal-source-foods in diets (B). The figure shows a decomposition of growth rates based on the decomposition method described in Supplementary Information 2, section S11 for different world regions (see Supplementary Information 1 for the country-region mapping). Black line indicates net growth.
