Fluorescence of the different forms of red snow algae after application of fluorochromes. (a) Congo red and Acridine orange: the varied intensity of the red fluorescence of the cell walls indicates differences in the structure of their polysaccharide layer (A2C2). The green and red fluorescence of the cells indicate the pH of the cells (A4C4); (b) Calcofluor white: the blue fluorescence of the cell walls indicates the presence of a thick cellulose-type layer in the cell wall, in contrast to cells that do not have the layer (A2,B2). The scale bar corresponds to 20 µm.
