  1. aSpecific surface area of metal oxide was calculated from N2 adsorption isotherms using the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method.
  2. bPrimary particle size of metal oxide was estimated from the specific surface area.
  3. cSecondary particle size of metal oxide after the deposition of Au NPs was measured by dynamic laser scattering.
  4. dActual loading amount of Au was determined by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) or atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS).
  5. eAverage particle size of Au NPs on metal oxides were estimated by HAADF-STEM.
  6. fMajority of Au species was considered to be atomically dispersed on CeO2 and could not be detected due to a limitation of resolution and low contrast between heavy Ce and Au atoms by TEM.
