The broad statistical matching approach showing treatment, control and outcomes variables. To account for the non-random distribution of protected areas, we included multiple predictive (control) variables to create a statistically balanced counterfactual sample to evaluate protected area impact. We selected anthropogenic drivers, suitability for growing crops, and biological aspects. In each country, we selected a treatment and control sample, where the treatment is protection. Matching was repeated separately for each country. Once a suitable counterfactual sample was selected, we calculated the amount of forest cover loss and carbon emissions that were avoided due to protection.
