Study flowchart. Cases (n = 31) were male subjects from the GENES study (n = 834) who experienced a Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) events during the follow-up period (11.9 ± 4.1 years). The control subjects (n = 31), matched for age and date of recruitment, were participants who remained free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke during follow-up. One Control was excluded because quantification of s-RNY1-5p in baseline serum failed. Analyses were thus based on a nested case–control population of 30 case patients and 30 control participants from the GENES study.
