Path model in Study 2. The letters a, b, c, and c’ depict the paths between the three variables, which are weighted by the regression coefficients. Significant coefficients (p < .05) are denoted with an asterisk. The total effect (path c) can be decomposed into two components, the direct effect and the indirect effect. Paths a and b represent the indirect effect that operates via the mediator, the number of training blocks required in the contingency learning task. Path c’ represents the direct effect of JtC scores on the causal judgements, that is, the amount of predictive power left after the mediational effect of training length has been partialed out.
