Murine MHC class II fragments are detectable in cell-free bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) from a mouse model of pneumococcal intratracheal infection. BALB/c mice (n = 7) were intratracheally infected with Streptococcus pneumoniae D39 (2 × 108 colony forming units in 50 µL PBS). Uninfected mice were administered PBS only. Neutrophil elastase (NE) inhibitor (sivelestat sodium hydrate (SSH) group; 50 mg/kg) or PBS (PBS group) was administered intraperitoneally into the infected mice every 6 h. MHC class II (I-A/I-E) levels in the cell-free BALF were determined by Western blotting. Murine spleen and lung tissue lysate from uninfected mice were included as controls. A representative Western blot image (three samples in each group) is shown.
