Removing auto-activators with FOA. (A) The experimental design. The AAs and EV (non-AAs) were mixed in a 5:1 ratio. The next day, the mixed culture was inoculated individually in –Leu (no selection), –L + FOA (putatively removing AAs), and –LH (putatively removing non-AAs) for 24 h. Then, the cultures were plated on –L plates for two days, and 48 colonies were picked and grown in –L media for two days. The 48 colonies were parallel-spotted on –L + FOA and –LH plates to count the percentage of AAs and non-AAs. (B) Growth of –L-grown AA:EV culture (left column), on –L + FOA plate (top), and –LH (bottom). The middle column contains colonies passed through –LH, while the right column contains colonies passed through –L + FOA. The two colonies marked with red and green boxes indicate AAs and EV, respectively.
