From: Machine learning applied to X-ray tomography as a new tool to analyze the voids in RRP Nb3Sn wires
Cross section of S21 Nb3Sn RRP wire before heat treatment. The picture is a combination of a Scanning Electric Microscope (SEM) image and an Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis of the surface. The sub-elements are surrounded by high purity Cu matrix. Each sub-element is an assembly of Nb and Nb-Ti filaments in a Cu matrix built around a Sn rod. The Nb barrier, around the sub-element, prevents Sn diffusion in the Cu matrix during the heat treatment.
