From: A cautionary tale about using the apparent carbon accumulation rate (aCAR) obtained from peat cores

aCAR and NCB (20 year moving average) for the baseline simulation (see "Methods"). The aCAR values are for a virtual core taken from halfway down the modelled hillslope at the end of the simulation. NCB is calculated during each year of the simulation (i.e. at the time peat is gained or lost) and is akin to measuring C fluxes. The inset shows the typical ‘uptick’ of aCAR in recently-accumulated peat layers seen in many peat cores.
