AMPK activates Parkin-independent autophagy in macrophages /monocytes and reduces severity of secondary bacterial lung infections. (a) Bacterial infections promote mitochondrial membrane depolarization (ΔΨm) followed by Parkin recruitment and autophagy activation. (b) Parkin-dependent autophagy facilitates bacterial killing and resolution, (c) however; subsequent degradation of Parkin and loss of Parkin signaling is associated with (d) macrophage immunosuppressive phenotype and high risk of secondary lung bacterial infections. (e) AMPK-dependent autophagy reduces risk of secondary bacterial lung infections and respiratory failure.
