A network analysis of mutation data in sequences from 36 countries yields nine major clusters of amino acids, suggesting mutations at certain positions evolved together. Each node in the network represents an amino acid position on the SARS-CoV2 wild type sequence. Several clusters have mutations that are characteristic of variants of concern, e.g. amino acids (N501, P681, T716, S982, A570 and D1118) in cluster 4 represent signature mutations in the Alpha variant, while those in cluster 6 correspond to the Beta variant.
