Working hypothesis on the relationship between attention and localization of masking noise. (A) Masking noise in the head. When tinnitus and the masking noise are at a close distance, the attention is focused on both. (B) Masking noise outside the head. The attention and perception of tinnitus may be reduced when the masking noise is at a distance from the tinnitus source. The blue splash means the masking noise, while the lightning shape means the simulated tinnitus.
