PCM dynamics. Block diagram illustration of the interplay between the electrical, thermal and structural dynamics in a PCM device. The system has two inputs \(V_{\text {cell}}\) and \(T_{\text {amb}}\) and one output I. \(V_{\text {cell}}\) is the voltage drop on the PCM device. \(T_{\text {amb}}\) denotes the ambient temperature at which the device is operated. I is the current flowing through the device. P is the electrical power dissipated by the device and is computed as the product between I and \(V_{\text {cell}}\). \(u_{\text {a}}\) is the effective thickness of the amorphous region and its evolution is determined by the crystallization dynamics. \(T_{\text {int}}\) is the temperature at the amorphous-crystalline interface and its evolution is determined by the heat balance equation.
