Cohort selection process. The dataset contained 948 instances where BIPAP was initiated. All BIPAP sessions of a patient with a previous diagnosis of respirator/ventilator dependence or sleep apnea were excluded. The last BIPAP session of any patient with a DNI/DNR order or who was transferred out of the unit prior to the BIPAP being discontinued was excluded. BIPAP sessions that resulted in intubation within 48 h of BIPAP discontinuation were considered BIPAP failures.
