The concentrations obtained from running numerical simulations of system (1)–(11) for 120 min, compared to the mean of the experimental results in Kanow et al.42. Using a protein concentration of 20 mg/ml as reported in Du et al.59, we converted the mean of the experimental data (n = 3 for each time point)42 given in pM/\(\mu\)g, to mM/ml (orange markers) and compared our numerical results (blue lines) to the experimental data for lactate (top) and pyruvate (center) in the rods, and pyruvate in the RPE (bottom). In this figure the vertical orange lines represent the standard error.
