EHP infection intensity grade scale. Infection grade was assessed by in situ hybridization (ISH) using the EHP infection index (EII) and assigned by the methodology proposed by Lightner21. Each infection grade category (I0–I4) was represented for the first time by a value range of EII (%) shown at the right side of the image. The figure shows how the EHP and tissue area are separately quantified using ×10 image to calculate the EII according to each infection stage proposed by Lightner21. Black arrows mark EHP detection.
