Sampled element/Ca data is represented by thin grey lines, with the thicker black line representing the 5 point moving average. Dashed vertical lines define years and vertical red lines indicate upwelling events as deduced from the δ18O and δ13C data. Vertical grey bars mark the position of dark growth bands as visible along the sampling paths in reflected light (Supplementary Fig. S2a).
