From: Mating experiences with the same partner enhanced mating activities of naïve male medaka fish

Possible model of the effect of the first mating experience in male medaka. In this study, we found that 3 genes (tshba, dio2, klf9) were upregulated after the first mating experience. tshba encodes thyroid stimulating hormone, which activates inactivated thyroid hormone (T4). DIO2, an enzyme that converts T4 to activated thyroid hormone T3. KLF9 is expressed depending on the T3 level and contributes to spine maturation. The first mating experience may lead to maturation of male mating behavior via neural maturation depending on the thyroid hormone system in the male medaka brain.
