(a) Picture of the five-condition device filled with dyes from two separate inlet ports (IN1 and IN2) of the FL, in the absence of CL. Blue and yellow dyes form a color gradient in the dilution tree, via serpentine mixers (M), reach five independent groups of four chambers (C1–C5), and flow into a common outlet (OUT). Scale bar 10 mm. (b,c) Formation of gradients through progressive mixing of a FITC solution (100 µM) injected into IN1 with a non-fluorescent solution injected into IN2. Mean fluorescence is measured from each culture chamber. Steady (b) and pulsing (c) gradient patterns of different duration are shown. Filled lines and error bars indicate mean ± SEM (N = 2 or 4). Colors indicate different groups of chambers, color coded as in (a).
