Hypoglycemia was defined as a plasma glucose level ≤ 3.9 mmol/L in patients with diabetes and severe hypoglycemia was defined as any hypoglycemic episode that led to seizures, loss of consciousness, and/or urgent medical attention. The number of hypoglycemic episodes was self-reported by patients on a questionnaire based on blood glucose self-monitoring diaries and their own memories.
