Bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) assay showing anti-proliferative effects of esomeprazole, pirfenidone, and the combination of both drugs. Fibroblasts derived from the lungs of IPF patients were stimulated with TGFβ (10 ng/mL) for 24 h and treated with vehicle (dH2O), esomeprazole (100 µM), pirfenidone (1 mM) or esomeprazole (100 µM) and pirfenidone (1 mM) combination for another 24 h. Cell proliferation, proportional to the incorporation of BrdU, was assessed spectrophotometrically by measuring absorbance at 450 nm. Data is mean ± SEM from triplicate experiments and represents three independent experiments. *p < 0.05 compared to no TGFβ control; #p < 0.05 compared to TGFβ only control.
