In both females and males, individuals on the first shape axis are differentiated by the angulation between the left and right lamina. Images in C through J illustrate thin-plate-spline warps of regression models for age (C,E) and BMI (D,F) on a mean female and male surface rendering, respectively. The procedure first selects the individual that is closest to the group (e.g., female, male) average. Then the group average was warped toward the two ends of the slope (regression line) defined by the regression coefficients of the two models. Shape differences were exaggerated by a factor of 2 to make them more visually prominent. Note that age and BMI were significant factors for females but only the model for age was significant for males (Table 3).
