Enucleated granulocytes from the BALF of intubated COVID-19 patient. (a) ARDS patients without HCQ (HCQ−) and (b) ARDS with prophylactic HCQ (HCQ+) group. Many non-nucleated cells were observed in the BALF, having the highest level of SARS-CoV-2 infection in comparison to other cells. These cells showed granulocytes origin showing CD15 positive. TEM imaging showed highly vacuolated phagosomes in both groups. However, the HCQ-treated group cells showed entirely filled phagosomes with mature viruses. Arrows SARS-CoV-2 virus.
