Overview of the time course of one experimental trial during the rating phase. Each trial started with a fixation cross, followed by the information (“REAL” or “FAKE”), and the face stimulus, which displayed one of three emotions (angry, neutral, or happy expression). Afterwards, participants rated the valence of the facial expression on a continuous 100-point scale, with endpoints labeled as “very negative” and “very positive”.
