(a) Bromoform concentrations in the dissolved phase of biotic rumen fluid, in three ‘replicate’ incubations following addition of a similar mass of A. taxiformis. (b) Bromoform in the dissolved phase of abiotic, autoclaved rumen fluid, following addition of similar amounts of A. taxiformis. (c) Dibromomethane in the same biotic rumen fluid incubations to which A. taxiformis had been added. (d) Dibromomethane in the same abiotic, autoclaved rumen fluid. Note the limit of detection for dibromomethane was 0.02 µmol l−1. Hence, points shown as 0 µmol l−1 may have been underestimates of the true concentration.
