Table 2 Characteristics of the rumen fluid used for each experiment (Table 1). Data are shown for the unamended incubations. The pH, NH3, volatile fatty acid (VFA) and dry matter (DM) content were determined at the start and end of each experiment. Productivity metrics over the 6 to 8 h incubations, are apparent DM disappeared (aDMd) and total gas production (TGP). Production of CH4 and VFA is normalized to the quantity of dry matter disappeared (DMd) over the incubation period. The value for VFA is the sum of acetic, propionic and butyric acids. Standard deviations are derived from triplicate incubations.
