An adult pig femur (Sus scrofa domestica) is used as a modern bone reference (Bioapatite). FAp (Fluorapatite reference), HAp (hydroxylapatite reference). Refer to Fig. S2 to view the diffractograms. Below, the deconvolution of the v2(CO3) region in the FTIR spectrum for each unit is shown. 879 cm−1 refers to type-A carbonates, 872 cm−1 to type-B carbonate substitution. Note that the carbonate band at 865 cm−1 is more defined in the bones bearing F− (GIII and GIV units).
