Experimental phantom validation of the OMCI system. The recovered absorption coefficient (\(\mu _a\) in \(\hbox {mm}^{-1}\)) images at the \(z=26\) mm plane are shown for a phantom of 52 mm thickness containing two optical inclusions using (a) sliding-bar detection patterns and (b) MLSVD-derived patterns. The cross-sectional plots at x = 71 mm (blue) and 117 mm (red) for each detection pattern type are shown in (c). The diffuse transmittance image residuals, which compute the differences between calibrated detector (camera) measurements and simulated detector measurements, obtained by solving the forward model of the reconstructed domain at each iteration, are plotted against reconstruction iterations in (d) and show the convergence of the reconstruction.
