In the left panel, two children engage in a butterfly chase, with one child using a fan to catch butterflies while the other observes with her fan hidden behind her back. The right panel portrays a boy who fastens a butterfly to a string and plays with it as if it were a kite, oblivious to the suffering such behaviour causes the butterfly.
