Monthly mean time series of water vapor anomalies at 85 hPa (water vapor anomalies at 85 hPa are an average over 100–70 hPa, here and in later figures) in the tropics (30°S–30°N). For SWOOSH data (1984–2017; blue line), MERRA-2 reanalysis data (1980–2017; red line), and WACCM4 data (1955–2005; black line). Anomalies are obtained by removing the annual cycle and linear trend from the original data. Asterisks indicate that the correlation coefficient (R) is significant at the 95% confidence level.
