Figure shows a JFM-mean correlation (in shading) of zonal mean zonal wind (u) with squared buoyancy frequency anomaly (\({N}_{\max }^{2}\), from Fig. 2a) for the period 1951-2020 in ERA5. Black contours (contour interval is 10 m s−1, i.e., ... −10, 0, 10, ...) show climatological zonal mean zonal wind over the same period. Stippling denotes statistically significant values that pass 95% threshold (based on a two-sided t-test). Note that corresponding regression coefficients are provided in Supplementary Fig. 5.
