The CRISPR-Cas9 system is a flexible tool for engineering a wide variety of genetic alterations in animal models. In laboratory mice, new models are usually created by delivering CRISPR-Cas9 reagents into early pre-implantation embryos previously isolated from pregnant females. This ex vivo approach can be technically challenging, especially for other rodent species.
