Cystic fibrosis (CF), a recessive genetic disease, is caused by mutations in a gene encoding the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein. CFTR helps to maintain the balance of salt and water on the surface of the lung, which is critical to regulating mucus viscosity. CFTR-rich pulmonary ionocytes have been identified in humans, pigs and ferrets, but mice lack ionocytes in their airways, making them a less than ideal CF model.
