Fig. 2

Estimated Shannon diversity index of fish species estimated for eight major bays by using a sample-based rarefaction analysis. a Sabine Lake, b Galveston Bay, c Matagorda Bay, d San Antonio Bay, e Aransas Bay, f Corpus Christi Bay, g Upper Laguna Madre, and h Lower Laguna Madre. The index is shown for different years. The exact sample size varies among locations and years, and it is presented in Supplementary Data 1. An increasing trend in index was significant for Sabine Lake (Holm–Bonferroni adjusted p-value = 0.000), San Antonio Bay (Holm–Bonferroni adjusted p-value = 0.020), Aransas Bay (Holm–Bonferroni adjusted p-value = 0.000), Upper Laguna Madre (Holm–Bonferroni adjusted p-value = 0.000), and Lower Laguna Madre (Holm–Bonferroni adjusted p-value = 0.000) based on a parametric bootstrap method (n = 1000). An increasing trend was not significant in other bays: Galveston Bay (Holm–Bonferroni adjusted p-value = 1.000), Matagorda Bay (Holm–Bonferroni adjusted p-value = 1.000), and Corpus Christi Bay (Holm–Bonferroni adjusted p-value = 1.000). None of the bays showed significantly declining trends. See Supplementary Data 2
