AANATs usually catalyze arylalkylamines, including phenylethylamines and indolethylamines. Dopamine, octopamine, tyramine, and phenylethylamine belong to phenylethylamines, and their structures are based upon the phenylethylamine structure as the core structure with substituents replacing one or more hydrogens. Serotonin and tryptamine belong to indolethylamines.
