The catecholamine neurotransmitter dopamine is oxidised into the catecholaldehyde DOPAL (3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetaldehyde) by monoamine oxidases (MAO), and further converted into the less toxic catecholic acid DOPAC (3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid) by aldehyde dehydrogenases (ALDH).
