These modular structures form geographically coherent units that change through time and underlie the global marine mega-assemblages. Circles represent the center of the geographic cells colored by their module affiliation (Supplementary Data 3). By recovering bioregions at lower hierarchical levels, we demonstrate that our multilayer approach captures temporal (inter-stage) relationships without destroying spatial (intra-stage) dynamics.
