The full model run on all samples included sex (male, female), location (ex-situ: FCC and NZCBI, in-situ: Conata), and their interaction as fixed effects, whereas the sex-specific models included only location as a fixed effect. PERMANOVA models assessed marginal effects such that for the full model, only the interaction is analyzed.
