Bivariate drought probabilities and joint return periods (JRPs) of drought risk for urban and rural stations, defined by drought duration and severity, are presented to demonstrate the intervals between drought events under varying climate patterns in China. Climate patterns of SPEI were derived using PCA (Supplementary Figs. 2 and 3). Based on SPEI-3, the analysis applied bivariate copulas and OR-based return periods (Tor) to evaluate drought events from 1951 to 2020.
