Tropical cyclones in the northern Indian Ocean represent a considerable threat to a vast population. Climatologically, the frequency of cyclonic storms is larger in the Bay of Bengal than in the Arabian Sea, the two regions encompassing the northern Indian Ocean. Since 2015, however, several severe and recurrent cyclonic storms have generated in the Arabian Sea, also making landfall in regions that have not witnessed tropical cyclones in recorded history. Such shifts allude to a potential change in northern Indian Ocean tropical cyclone characteristics.

These changes in northern Indian Ocean cyclone characteristics — particularly the increase in activity in the Arabian Sea — point to various shifts in dynamic and thermodynamic processes, the causes of which require further investigation. Yet, enhanced activity in the Arabian Sea, including novel landfall locations, illustrates the need for greater hazard preparedness to minimize loss of life and damage, particularly in the face of a continually evolving and anthropogenically forced climate.
