Left column shows the results of a single simulation within which this shut-off event is 100 generations, right column one within which it is 150 generations. Panels AD are equivalent to Fig. 2, showing genotypic composition and fluxes. E, F show the cycling ratios of both environmental substances, G, H the net level of these substances in the system. Shut-off length is the only difference between the two simulations, producer cost is uniformly \({\kappa }_{{prod}}=0.01\).
