AHWs and MHWs (a) mean (Imean) and maximum intensity (Imax) mean values annual trend with linear regression (shadowed area shows the 95% confidence interval) and (b) regional distribution of Imean trend (dots show 99% statistically significant values). All plots show trends for the 1940–2022 period with reference period 1961–1990. A general positive trend is observed throughout the basin, being more intense for MHWs and especially for maximum intensity.
